1940s - He co-founded the newspaper Belize Billboard
1951 - He and Philip Goldson were convicted on sedition charges under the British colonial regime for anti‐colonial writings.
1950 - He cofounded the People’s United Party (PUP)
1954 - He led the PUP to its first major victory in 1954
1954 - 1957 - Mayor of Belize City and an elected member of the Legislative Assembly
1956 - He left the PUP in 1956 and helped found the Honduran Independence Party (HIP).
2008 (Shortly before his death) he was awarded Belize’s Order of Distinction in recognition of his patriotic contributions, despite many years abroad.
His legacy was commemorated in Belize through the naming of the headquarters' building for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Leigh Richardson Building.
He was born to Belizean parents; moved with them to British Honduras (now Belize) at about age five.
Leigh Richardson died in New York City, United States, due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.
